Plasma 6.0 has been released. Check out the new overview, improved colour management, a cleaner theme, more effects, better overall performance, and much more.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Can I use my Gmail account in Kmail now?
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Apparently, the answer is "No, I can't use Gmail with Kmail in Plasma 6".
Booted the current Fedora 40 nightly KDE ISO. Using "Online Accounts" did not set up my Gmail account in Kmail. Kmail found the account in Mozilla's database when I tried to create it directly in Kmail. I was led through a dialog that ended with a display of server info with a "Previous" and a "Quit" button. The account was not created. #KDE #Plasma6
@Corb_The_Lesser @kde @kde@lemmy.kde.social yeah the new wizard had to be completely rewritten for Qt6 and still requires a bit of work and testing with various email providers.
@Corb_The_Lesser Too bad. It looks pretty.
I thought it was working years ago via IMAP. Is that not working now or do you mean using another method?
@TheFinn@discuss.tchncs.Gmail may have worked with Kmail occasionally in the past. I think sometimes that involved going back to your Google account and telling it to accept an "unsecure" app. To be honest, I wouldn't do that for an email app.
Elementary has the same problem with its mail app.
Elementary has the same problem with its mail app.
Because the problem is Google not wanting third party apps accessing their service.
Edit: In other news, I just tried it and GMail works just fine with KMail. Setting up is a three step process and automatic most of the way.
@Bro666 I tried it on Fedora 40 with Plasma 6. Don't know if it's broken there or not. In any case, the account wizard repeatedly showed me a screen with only a back and quit button when the account hadn't yet been created.
Also kept telling me I had set up 2 accounts and asking if I'd like to unify them.
Haven’t heard this one before, but it sounds like a trip to bugs.kde.org to me. Check if it hasn’t been reported. Maybe also check on Fedora, as it may be something going on there.
Thanks for your help!
Google eliminated IMAP years ago in favor of OAuth and their API. Thunderbird kept up, I think. KMail didn’t
Im using my gmail account in kmail literally right now, what do you mean?
Teach me your ways, senpai. I’ve tried and couldn’t get it to work.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social oh that is HELLA fancy
My son impressed his friends with wobbly windows the other day. Got to introduce him to the cube.
Let’s gooo! Can’t wait to install it
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Congrats on the release, great to see KDE going from strength to strength. I like the subtle changes to the breeze theme.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Can someone explain to me why having a cube to rotate is better than the classic desktop switching views?
@unlucio @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Well, it's a "in the eye of the beholder" situation. Neither is better, it's just what each person prefers. I quite like the cube, mainly because of the way in which I can perform 4-or-more-way desktop checking.
It isn’t better or more efficient. Some people think it’s cool. I don’t you don’t. Some think it’s cool and that’s ok.
@unlucio @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social well its one of those classic features people wanted back. Probably because its fun and visually appealling
For me it made it easier to visualise which desktop had which thing on, so I knew the front face of the cube was my main desktop and my email was on the face to the right.
The default way for some reason never really clicked with me the way the 3d cube did
Apple did something like that, I guess in the first version of fast user switching for OSX.
On the bottom of the page containing the cool rotation animation, they wrote "Because we can.’
That’s it in a nutshell.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social
thanks for all the answers, long story short seems like the reason might be "aesthetics".
Personally, I'm happy if something works great, and is also visually pleasant, but I'd never
"Sacrifice speed and efficiency on the altar of beauty"
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Wooohooo. Party time.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social
Blur effect is by default?
@kde Whoohoo! Does the cube have the configurable aquarium inside?
Awesome, can’t wait to try it out!
Congratulations and thanks to everyone who worked on it!

We will continue providing support for the legacy X11 session for users who prefer to stick with it for now.
That's GREAT to know. There are a few users in here who have had bad experiences with Wayland and would rather stick with X11.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Can't wait to check this one out! Godspeed KDE!!
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social the alt text on the third screenshot is wrong, should be gwenview
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social I almost switched to KDE from XFCE because I wanted a desktop with a bit "more" but it ran like crap on my PC. Idk if it is because of KDE issues or my GTX 960 is just too old.
I’d say the GTX 960 is unlikely to be the bottleneck. Plasma really does not need a recent GPU.
@leopold That's the thing though, I built the current PC during the pandemic and crypto craze. Everything is relatively new, except the GPU, because I couldn't afford one, but I needed a better CPU for audio recording and editing.
do you use an SSD? from my experience, that can make a really big difference with Plasma
When was the last time you used KDE? It’s been able to run on low-spec machines since KDE4 which about a decade old
last time I used KDE was today. you probably meant to reply to someone else, tho.
woops, indeed
Not the GPU itself but rather its drivers. Plasma 6 flies on potatoe laptop integrated graphics in power saving mode.
I run KDE 6 on Core 2 Duo with Nvidia 9400/nouveau.
@shanesemler @kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social For what it's worth: I still run KDE Plasma 5 on a core 2 duo and a period correct low tier gpu, it won't blow your socks off, but it works fine, and i have no reason to believe that 6 should perform worse.
This makes me reminisce about Sabayon Linux.
Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. A long time.
Not related, but why do most of the comments here have several user accounts tagged/linked?
They come from outside the Lemmy app like kbin
Sounds like they’re masto toots?
This is a masto post
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social @spacekookie ooh my fave interface!
