If you're at (or any conference): Wear your name badge.

Without a name badge, I will assume that you are an absolute jerk online and do not want to face the consequences of your actions.

@mwlucas Keep in mind the name badges have not been passed out yet. The ones you are seeing are probably for the FreeBSD Dev Summit.

@kurtm They are. That's more of a general rant.

I'll be repeating this every day until the con is over. Because, for some reason, certain people take their badges off when they talk to me...

@mwlucas Or that person just values their privacy and doesn't want to labelled and tagged in everyone's photos on the internet.

There may be other good reasons people don't want their name on a badge worn in public.

@MacLemon

It is possible. It probably does happen.

The only case I experience, however, is people removing their badges because they have argued with me online and don't want to own their words in meatspace.

So I react accordingly, and declare my policy.

@mwlucas @MacLemon I just don’t want to be put into a category because of my name! You know what they say about my name.
I wish I had the time to go.

@mwlucas I no way did I try to invalidate your policy or personal experience. (I couldn't anyway even if I wanted to which I obviously don't.)

My personal experience has taught me that there are many, equally valid reasons, for not wanting to wear a name badge at a conference. At least not in plain sight.

I can follow the reasoning for your policy. Given my experience as layed out above, how would you convey that to me in meatspace in trying to prevent a misunderstanding?

@MacLemon

I tell people that if they're at the con, they should wear a name badge. That opens the door for people to say their concerns.

If you were to identify yourself by internet handle, that would help.

I don't give people the finger for not wearing a name badge. I just don't exert much of an effort if you're not identified.

I also have a very different threat profile than most people. An bunch of MRAs and an increasing number of right wingers want to score points off of me. :flan_sad:

@mwlucas Sorry if I mistakenly interpreted “name” as ID-name, my fallacy. Using a handle or nickname already makes that a lot easier as it allows for pseudonyms.

Drawing conslusions on one's threat model off of the preference to wear a nick/badge sounds like a stretch to me. Also unlikely what you meant, I guess.

I have the luxury of falling into the “privileged-causasian-white-male” by appearance, so I have the privilege of being able to just tell my nick. …

@MacLemon

I'm good if your name badge says MacLemon. In your case, I'd encourage it--because that's who you are. :flan_wink:

But the folks who come at me uniformly adopt the "no name badge" angle. :flan_sad: I've seen some of them pull off namebadges before coming to talk to me. :flan_eyeroll:

@mwlucas I normally introduce myself as MacLemon as well. I'd probably even put that on a tag, but I would't wear it around my neck/on my chest. More hanging at the waist level. But that's my personal preference for privacy in meatspace (and elsewhere).

Being a public figure like yourselves probably changes the “benefit of the doubt” position since there's a strong asymmetry on knowledge about the person vis-à-vis.

@mwlucas I also understand that many are less privileged and would rather be more silent about who they are or as who they want to be perceived and rather not shout that out by wearing a badge. (Dare I say license-plate?)

My cultural background and peer group also play into this. Not being from the nothern-america continent I associate name badges with “service personal at a fast food counter” type of situation which I find rather strange there already, let alone anywhere else.

@MacLemon

Yes, culture plays into this.

Here in North American cons, it's always white men who go without badges. PoC don't seem to have a problem with them.

@mwlucas Maybe white-males can just more easily get away with it than PoC? Maybe PoC run into more problems of being mistaken for non-attendees when not wearing a badge? So they do to stay out of more annoying situations?
Would need a PoC to answer that.

@mwlucas Thanks for taking the time and effort to discuss and elaborate on your point of view, meatspace perception of situations.
Much appreciated! #TIL!

@MacLemon

This is the fediverse.

We talk to each other like adults here.

@mwlucas Adults are overrated! I try to keep my inner child alive! :-)
