Bringing down the bsd.network instance for a few minutes to disable on the host. and non-openbsd users might also want to consider that ;).

We're back!

In case you are wondering why we'd disable on a server, check out the commit message mail-archive.com/source-change

Or the article by El Reg: theregister.co.uk/2018/06/20/o

I'm Speculating(tm), but expect further news about problems in those areas...

From Jasper and Theo:

"""> Thanks to Ben Gras of VUSec for sharing an early version the research paper
> with us. More details will be made public soon as 'tlbleed'.

Thanks for saying that Jasper. And thanks to Ben for getting the paper to us.

As demonstrated in the commit message, we hesitate to pass on more information. That remains Ben's thunder in Vegas.

@phessler hm, how is that helping? Isn't hyperthreading supposed to help using as much cpu as possible? I know its basicly halving a cores speed, but isn't it more useful on fairly threaded stuff like mastodon?

@phessler @SolSoCoG There's speculation over a Spectre-like CPU vulnerability enabled by Hyperthreading.

@phessler lots of grumbling that this is related to percivals paper back in 05, but from what I understand it's something completely new /shrug

@grubernaut we knew about Percival's paper from '05 when he published it.

We didn't disable HT in -current then, but are disabling it now.

@phessler gotcha, knew it had to be something new that's come up since then :)

@phessler disabling hyperthreading kind of kills the point of using a top end Intel CPU doesn't it? Without hyperthreading an i7 is no better than i5?

@sprocket using intel cpus is pretty much full of fail anyways.

we were promised a bag of lies.

@phessler Seeing how the bsd.network is administrated I am tempted to switch instances :)

@cynicalsecurity @phessler I have never installed or directly used a BSD so I hesitate to transfer to the dark side.

@mwlucas @cynicalsecurity @phessler Yes, I am sure of it. I also use openssh on a daily basis. It’s part of the reason I finally made a modest donation to the OpenBSD foundation in the beginning of the year.

I mean I have never directly installed and used any of the BSDs on my own systems. Except as components of Genode :p

BSD Network

bsd.network is a *BSD-adjacent Mastodon Instance. We have a code of conduct.
