Tumblr to join the fediverse after WordPress migration completes https://tcrn.ch/3WYMJLz
@TechCrunch it's going to be wild.
@TechCrunch ...and people are already boycotting this for whatever reason. (cough fedipact 2)
@TechCrunch @alextecplayz
Probably because of WordPress
@icil @TechCrunch More specifically Matt Mullenweg and the alleged poor moderation of the site. I won't jump on this pact bandwagon. I haven't blocked Threads, and I sure as shit am not gonna block Tumblr. If I have to, I'll limit the domain like I did with Threads.
@alextecplayz @icil @TechCrunch Second that. Tumblr has had a pretty rocky history, to say the least, but most of it was internal. They're more or less benign in the grand scheme of things.
@alextecplayz
I mean the guy behind Wordpress and tumblr is spouting some crazy stuff these days so it makes some sense.
Why people would be on centralized, non-public, non-free platforms when open and free alternatives exist is beyond me anyways. Blocking these kind of abusive companies that just try to turn a profit seems like the logical step to take.
@the_moep @alextecplayz that honestly doesn't sound like you have ever been on tumblr.
until today tumblr kept the social media 1.0 vibes because they didn't change the concept. until today it is the only platform where followers don't count because they are hidden. until today it's the only platform where you can easily avoid the drama of the real world. and until today there is no real enforced enshitification. tumblr is loved because it's the good old internet.
Matt does need a hug though
@sturmsucht I was extremely active on tumblr until they were sold, extremely strict rules were put in place and lots of the core community fled.
I heard they got better after it was sold three (or so) times but seeing as the core community (at least from my perspective) is pretty much gone and they are now owned by such a hostile individual (both in a personal and an economical sense) I still stand by my original take.
@sturmsucht From my perspective it's the same way still "alive" as MySpace is...
@the_moep agree to disagree.
@alextecplayz @TechCrunch some people's favorite thing to do on the fediverse is find fun and new ways to prevent it from ever being successful.
private companies are universally bad. people i want to talk to are on social media from private companies. if i want ppl to move into some nonprofit instance, the worst strategy I can think of to do that is "block everyone i could potentially convince later on". the comparisons to EEE are not applicable here, IMO.
@doomy @TechCrunch I concur. We can't yet afford to outright block corporate-run Fedi instances like Threads and Imgur.
"Normies", "the masses" don't discover a social media platform like Mastodon of their own volition, they'll show some interest when their own friends are over here, and that's what we should be focusing on at this time.
This, and we need attractive feature sets, but one of the major ones that could bring over anyone, regardless of political views or leaning, is that Fedi isn't ONE social media. It's a decentralized group that communicates with each other without the fear of some government just blocking it, because they probably won't bother to block every Fedi instance out there, and there are probably thousands, if we're to count single-user or small group-run instances.
@TechCrunch "it'll be rad but no, there's still no actual time frame, despite years passing since we first announced this"
@TechCrunch this is actually great
@TechCrunch HOLY SHIT WHAT
@TechCrunch - I like your shoelaces!
@TechCrunch #tumblr completes the fediverse
@mr_breakfast @TechCrunch In what way does this "complete" the fediverse?
@tristen @TechCrunch just a bit of humor
my feed on Tumblr is completely different than it is on here, so it'd be nice to be able to just... create that feed here
@mr_breakfast @TechCrunch oh I see what you mean. Like, being able to have one feed for all? I haven't been on Tumblr in years. Thats a good point. <3
@TechCrunch now that's some good news! #fediverse
@TechCrunch eternal September redux?
@TechCrunch I was wondering what was taking so long.
@TechCrunch So I can migrate my #tumblr account to #Mastodon or #Pixelfed?
@TechCrunch It would be great to be able to merge accounts within the #fediverse.
@harriorrihar@mas.to @TechCrunch@mstdn.social It depends what you mean.
If you mean "use different platforms with the same account" it would be great, but it's mostly not possible. Although, I've heard some people are working on it.
If you mean merge two accounts from two different platforms into one, it's possible for some platforms (remember that when you migrate an account what you really do is merge an old account into another account).
This current account was originally on Mastodon. It's now on Firefish and sooner or later I'll migrate it to a third platform.
@harriorrihar @TechCrunch No, the idea would be that your tumblr account would start federating, so folks from Mastodon or PixelFed could follow it and see the posts in their feed.
@harriorrihar@mas.to @TechCrunch@mstdn.social It's unlikely that you'll be able to migrate the account (but maybe? Who knows?) but you'll be able to follow accounts and share posts from one platform to the other.
@TechCrunch i am still curious how they'll handle the different post formats of fedi and tumblr
@TechCrunch Tumblr has fantastic people, I am excited
@DarthAstrius @TechCrunch Fedi is just Tumblr but gayer, so not much will change
@TechCrunch This is going to be fun
@TechCrunch The Fediverse is better off without any Matt Mullenweg involvement. Temperamental tech bros ruin everything they touch.
@TechCrunch
Tumblr is WHAT
@TechCrunch i'm curious to see if this ever happens, to be honest. tumblr's been talking about this for a good while, but hasn't delivered. i get the same vibes from them as i did from threads, promising but never delivering.
@TechCrunch I've heard they've been planning to add Activitypub for a long time. Tumble gave me lots of good memories. I think this is good news.
